Former world number three David Ferrer will replace Sergi Bruguera as the new captain of Spain in the Davis Cup, reported the Spanish Tennis Federation (RFET).
Ferrer, 40, has signed an agreement to captain Spain for the next three years and will be officially introduced to his new role in Madrid on Monday, the RFET said in a statement on Thursday.
Ferrer won the Davis Cup as a player three times for Spain, lifting the trophy in 2008, 2009 and 2011, as well as a runner-up finish in 2012.
In his best Grand Slam performance, he reached the 2013 Roland Garros final, where he was defeated by compatriot Rafa Nadal. Twice he reached the semifinals of the Australian Open and the US Open.
Ferrer retired from the sport in 2019. He was named tournament director for the Davis Cup finals in June.
He replaces Bruguera, a two-time French Open winner who was named captain in 2018 and led Spain to its sixth Davis Cup title in 2019.
Spain, which could not count on world number one Carlos Alcaraz or Nadal, was defeated 2-0 by Croatia in the quarterfinal tie of the 2022 Davis Cup final phase played in Malaga last month. .
Spain’s next appointment in the Davis Cup will be in September next year, after the team received an invitation to the 2023 finals.
