Taylor Swift’s ‘Midnights’ has become the record that has sold more copies on vinyl than on CD since 1987
Taylor Swift’s Midnights has become the best-selling vinyl album of the 21st century, and the one that has sold more copies on vinyl than on CD since 1987.
After its premiere, five editions of ‘Midnights’ were released on CD and vinyl, differentiated by colours, copies were quickly limited by the short time in which they were sold.
NME estimates that around 800,000 copies have been sold so far since its release in October. Since 1987, a vinyl album has not sold more copies than its CD format, in that year the best-selling records were Michael Jackson’s ‘BAD’, the ‘Dirty Dancing’ soundtrack, and Guns N’ ‘Appetite For Destruction’ Roses.
Entertainment Retailers Association chief executive Kim Bayley said in a statement to The Guardian that Taylor Swift’s monumental sales define a defining moment in the music industry.
“After the CD came along and pretty much wiped out the vinyl business, few of us would have believed a renaissance like this was possible,” Bayley said.
Also, Taylor has become the first artist to top the Billboard Radio Songs chart in all three decades of the 2000s, 2010s, and 2020s.
