Madonna has once again aroused criticism for posing as a Virgin in the Vanity Fair editions for Italy, Spain and France.
The singer graces the cover of three different issues for the month of February at the launch of the annual “Icon Issue” project that celebrates the legends who help shape modern culture.
Images created by photographers Luigi and Iango highlight the singer as a weeping Virgin, complete with a sword, heart pierced on the outside of her chest, and another in which she portrays a Jesus at a women’s Last Supper.
The publication disclosed that more than 80 contributors were involved, noting that it will also lead to a future exhibition, short film, and street art performance.
“Zero everything 👎 I see that they have run out of creativity. I don’t see art, I don’t see anything. The only thing is mockery of what if we believe in the Most High and her mother! Total failure“, “This is superfluous. Artistic creation can be done without becoming excessively ‘grotesque’” and “It is not necessary to continue using religious images or scenes to mock. If you don’t believe you must be respected, but if you believe too. It is about respect for both”, were some of the comments that the publication received.
In keeping with her couture history, Madonna dressed for the shoot in designs by John Galliano for Maison Margiela, Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, Jean Paul Gaultier and others under the direction of her regular collaborator, the Swedish stylist B. Akerlund.
In the article accompanying the photos of her, Madonna discusses feminism, sexuality, religion and diversity, as well as her return to the stage and plans for a long-running biopic of her in the works.
