The firstborn of Don Juan Carlos and Doña Sofía, the Infanta Elena turns 58 today. Set aside by Felipe VI as a full member of the Royal Family, her official agenda is practically nil. The most discreet and familiar of Felipe VI’s sisters lives devoted to her work at the Mapfre Foundation and equestrianism, one of her great passions.
Divorced from Jaime de Marichalar since 2008, she has two children Felipe Juan Froilán and Victoria Federica. It is one of the daughters of Don Juan Carlos who has always been closest to her, having visited her on more than one occasion in Abu Dhabi, where she currently resides.
This year, waiting for a possible return home, the Infanta will spend her birthday away from him and also from her sister, who took up residence in Switzerland and with whom she is also very close.
The Infanta Elena was in Abu Dhabi for the last time a little over a week ago, happy at the imminent return of her father to Spain after a year and a half in Dubai. Although it was speculated that Don Juan Carlos would spend Christmas at home, it seems that finally the possibility that return to the Palacio de la Zarzuela coinciding with his 84th birthday, next January 5.
A gift from Kings in advance for his daughter, who despite her discretion has not hesitated to publicly confess her wishes for her father to return to the country.
With her children now independent, Infanta Elena dedicates part of her free time to horses. Last November she received one of the most prestigious awards, such as the Madrid Horse Week Award, which is awarded each year to a star of this sport.
“She deserves it because she has spent her whole life in the horse world. The help she has given to equestrian and to those of us who have asked her for something is very important, either us or anyone from the horse world”, explained in an interview Daniel Entrecanales Domecq, president of the Organizing Committee of Ifema Madrid Horse Week and of which the Infanta is honorary president.
