British actress Emma Thompson criticized this Sunday the culture of throwing away and wasting things, when she arrived at the Earthshot awards ceremony against climate change, sponsored by Prince William and for which Costa Rica is nominated.

Speaking on the green carpet, the interpreter, who presented the awards at the gala at Alexandra Palace in London, stressed that the good thing about these awards is that they seek “Solutions” to common problems, such as waste.

“They address something that we carry deep in our consciousness, this feeling of waste, of wasted food, you go to the supermarket and ask yourself, ‘what happens to this food at the end of the day, where will it go?” she claimed.

“It is that feeling of despair in the face of this great problem, and one of the solutions is going to be here”, she added.

The actress pointed out that her parents’ generation would have been horrified to see that people consume “A cup of coffee and throw it away, eat and throw, everything is thrown away.”

Thompson explained that the organizers asked the guests not to buy new clothes to attend the ceremony –“Imagine what a relief!”she joked, so she chose to wear the same outfit that she wore when she was decorated by Queen Elizabeth II, as well as her “Oldest ring”, given to her by her husband 26 years ago.

Actress Emma Watson also entered the green carpet, who confessed that her dress was a wedding dress recycled from materials obtained in charity shops.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Guillermo and Catalina – she in a dress made for her by Alexander McQueen in 2011 – are also present at the event, which is held privately to be broadcast on the BBC public network starting at 19 GMT.

The Earthshot Awards, created by the Royal Foundation, will recognize the five most innovative projects out of a total of fifteen finalists divided into five categories.
