And finally, in the summer of 1966, Vicente Fernandez signed his first contract with a record company, CBS, today Sony Music.
From the beginning he was successful thanks to songs like “Your way and mine”, “Forgive me”, “Cantina del barrio”, “Not in self-defense” and “Word of the king”, but as he had told his mother he did Over 20 years, he wanted much more than to be a singer.
In 1971 he made his film debut with One and a Half Against the World and three years later, he starred in his first film success, Law of the hill.
Vicente Fernandez really achieved success until he recorded a song by Fernando Z. Maldonado, Return Return, a song with a theme very different from the usual ones: the male who accepts that he lost and wants to regain his beloved.
He broke all records, sold all copies with this song and not only in Mexico, but also in the United States and South America. Then yes, Vicente Fernández was already king.
In the early 1980s, the Mexican media christened him “The idol of Mexico” and they were not wrong. More songs, tours, records followed. By 1989 he sold another of his greatest hits: the album By your damn love. In 1990, Fernández produced another major album titled The Classics of José Alfredo Jiménez.
It was the perfect couple – Vicente Fernández, Mexico’s best ranchero singer, performing songs by José Alfredo Jiménez, Mexico’s best ranchero songwriter.
