Janet Yellen was sworn in Tuesday as the 78th U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, the first woman to hold the post.

She was sworn in by Vice President Kamala Harris at a ceremony in an outside gallery of the White House overlooking the Treasury Department. Yellen’s husband, George Akerloff, a 2001 Nobel laureate in economics, and their son Robert, also an economist, attended the ceremony.

Yellen was confirmed by the Senate on Monday with 84 votes in favor and 15 against, all from Republican senators.

The administration of President Joe Biden has highlighted the need for swift approval of cabinet members given the dangers the country faces amid the global pandemic and the downturn in the economy.

Yellen has held other senior positions in the economic sector. She was the first female chair of the Federal Reserve, from 2014 to 2018.
