U.S. News and World Report released its fall ranking of the best high schools in the United States, including several Illinois schools.

Choosing which school to take your children to can be a concern for parents, so knowing which institutions are the best can help you decide. Five high schools in Chicago were named among the top 100 in the United States, according to a report.

U.S. News and World Report released its fall ranking of the best high schools in the United States, which included several Illinois schools.

Topping the list was Payton College Preparatory High School, which ranked No. 10 on the list, a drop from the fifth spot the school held earlier this year.

The report, released Monday, named the top high schools for the 2023-24 school year and ranked public high schools using a set of six “metrics.”

Among the metrics were: college readiness, breadth of college curriculum, performance on state assessments, performance of disadvantaged students and graduation rates.

These are the top Chicago schools according to the rankings and their positions:

  • Northside College Preparatory (number 37)
  • Jones College Prep (#60)
  • Young Magnet High School (#63)
  • Lane Technical High School (#70)

Outside the Chicago area, the next highest-ranked public high schools, but in positions above the 200s are:

  • Adlai E. Stevenson High School, Lincolnshire.
  • Vernon Hills High School, Proviso Math and Science Academy, in Forest Park
  • Lake Forest High School, Lake Forrest

The top five schools in Illinois in the national ranking were the same ones that appeared on a previous list released earlier this year, but there were changes.

According to the report the top-ranked school in the United States was Early College at Guilford, in Greensboro, North Carolina. The second best in the country was Signature School in Evansville, Indiana.
