The Capitol Police has requested this Thursday that the deployment of the National Guard in Washington be extended for two more months, a decision conditioned by the recent threats of a new assault on the building.
The current deployment, of about 5,000 National Guard agents, would end on March 12, so the Police have requested their permanence in a document presented by the acting head of the body, Yogananda Pittman, and which is now evaluating the Defense Department.
As recalled in a statement by the Capitol Police, on Wednesday Pittman warned that threats to members of the United States House of Representatives have increased by 93 percent during the first months of this year.
In this sense, the body has expressed its gratitude to the National Guard and the Department of Defense for the support provided since last January 6, when a group of protesters supporting former President Donald Trump stormed the Capitol to prevent the certification of victory of the now president, Joe Biden, in the November elections, an event that left five dead, including an agent.
The petition comes when, also this Wednesday, the Capitol Police, the Security Department and the FBI have warned of threats of “a possible plot” by a group of militias to attack the building this Thursday, March 4.
