A Russian-flagged freighter sank off the Turkish Black Sea coast on Sunday, according to Turkish authorities, which began rescue operations for the crew.

Emergency workers were trying to rescue 15 people who were in three lifeboats, said the governor of Bartin province, announcing the shipwreck near Inkumu, in northern Turkey. There were no reports of deaths or that the boats were in danger, said the governor, Sinan Guner.

The area has seen recent heavy rains, snowfall and gales.

“The weather conditions are bad and the rescue teams are also having trouble landing,” the governor said, in remarks quoted by the official Turkish Anadolu news agency.
