Pizza Hut closes 300 restaurants in the United States: in which cities?

For the past few years, Yum! Brands, owner of Pizza Hut, has executed several restaurant closures for a special reason: it is very expensive to maintain those with dining rooms.

We are in the second half of 2023 and this year already represents one of the most complicated for several companies, regardless of their size and presence in the United States. Many of the country’s large companies in various industries have had to close their doors for different reasons, including high maintenance costs due to inflation. Pizza Hut was not spared and has closed around 300 restaurants, some of which closed without notice.

Pizza Hut is one of the largest pizza restaurant chains in the United States. However, that does not leave it exempt from the biggest inflation in the last 40 years, as keeping its restaurants is more expensive. This year, the brand has closed 300 restaurants. What is striking about this situation is that there are locations where customers were not even notified.

According to a statement from Yum! Brands, owner of Pizza Hut, the pizza chain is focusing on locations with dining rooms, as these restaurants “significantly underperform”. Currently, many people enjoy Pizza Hut’s delivery and takeout options, so it is becoming less common for them to head to its restaurants to consume their pizza on-site.

In 2019, Yum! Brands closed around 500 dine-in restaurants.

However, these closures have come as a surprise to many customers, who end up finding out about the situation with some written note taped to the closed door of the Pizza Hut of their choice, as happened at the 4822 Route 30 branch in Amsterdam, where it read “Closed 4 Good,” according to a Daily Gazette report.

This circumstance has been repeated in several New York counties, where there have been a series of abrupt closures of different Pizza Hut restaurants. The pizzeria has closed at least seven locations across the state in recent weeks, including in Herkimer, Fulton Country and Montgomery counties, according to local media reports.

The seven Pizza Hut locations in New York that just closed were located at:

  • Cobleskill: 109 Barnerville Road.
  • Johnstown: Route 30A, Johnstown Shopping Center
  • Herkimer: 306 W Albany Street
  • Monticello: 352 E Broadway
  • Amsterdam: 4822 Route 30
  • Gloversville: 195 2nd Avenue
  • Ballston Spa: 2103 Doubleday Avenue

The company confirmed it would close the restaurants in a statement, but did not say why those locations were no longer serving guests. In fact, none of these locations are currently listed on Pizza Hut’s website.

“While we can confirm that these particular locations have closed, the Pizza Hut brand is experiencing growth, including in New York, and remains committed to providing outstanding service and products to our valued customers across the country,” the company said in a statement.

Despite the closures, Pizza Hut still has a large presence in the Empire State with more than 150 locations. And nationwide, finding a restaurant shouldn’t be a problem, as there are nearly 7,000 locations nationwide.
