Los Angeles city firefighters found actor Matthew Perry “unconscious in an individual hot tub” when they were received the emergency call to come to his home Saturday.
“A passerby pulled the man’s head from the water and carried him to the edge, then firefighters removed him from the water upon arrival,” the department said in a statement on Monday when asked about the incident at Perry’s address. “Unfortunately, a quick medical assessment revealed that the man had passed away before first responders arrived.”
The circumstances surrounding Perry’s death are being investigated by the Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles County medical examiner, the city fire department said.
An autopsy was performed, but examiners are awaiting the results of toxicology reports to determine Perry’s cause of death. Those reports could take weeks to complete.
Investigators plan to use the toxicology reports to determine if any foreign substances may have contributed to Perry’s death, according to a law enforcement source.
Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey told that a 911 call was received Saturday at 4:07 p.m. for a water rescue emergency. The Los Angeles Police Department responded at 4:10 p.m. and shortly thereafter characterized the call as a death investigation.
The Los Angeles Police Department’s Robbery-Homicide Division is investigating Perry’s death, but a law enforcement source told that no crime is suspected.
