The covid-19 pandemic has caused more than 550,000 deaths in the Latin American and Caribbean region, according to a balance established by AFP this Monday morning from official sources.

At least 550,383 people died as a result of the new coronavirus in the region, the second worst hit in number of deaths behind Europe (659,574), since the virus was identified in China in December 2019.

The more than 550,000 deaths in Latin America and the Caribbean represent more than a quarter of deaths worldwide (more than two million), out of a total of 17,368,040 cases (almost 95 million cases in the world).

Brazil is the most mourning country in the region with more than 209,000 deaths, followed by Mexico (more than 140,000), Colombia (more than 48,000) and Argentina (more than 45,000).

Worldwide, the United States is the country with the most deaths, with almost 400,000 deaths.
