Heavy rainfall will affect the Washington area this Friday and the largest storm surge event in years is expected in some sectors. 

A coastal flood advisory is in effect for parts of DC, Arlington, Alexandria and Falls Church until 8 a.m. Sunday. Water levels could be four feet higher than usual during periods of high tide.

Prince George’s County Schools announced they would close an hour earlier this Friday and cancel overnight activities due to weather conditions. The Anne Arundel and Calvert County campuses had already announced that they would be closing on Friday. 

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), high water levels are forecast on the Southwest Washington Waterfront, which includes the Municipal Fish Market, the Navy Yard area, and on King and Union Streets of Alexandria. 

The strongest currents are expected at 3 p.m. Friday and 3 a.m. Saturday, according to NWS.

The rainfall started early on Friday and is expected to continue for the rest of the day. Up to two inches of rain could fall before 8 pm, but more water could affect the sectors impacted by the worst bands in the system.

Advisories for DC, Maryland, and Virginia

The National Weather Service warns of possible floods and wind.

A flood advisory has been issued for the entire DC area until 6:30 pm on Friday.

A coastal flood advisory is in effect for sectors around the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay through Saturday morning, including Anne Arundel, Calvert, Charles, Fairfax, Prince William and Stafford counties and the cities of Alexandria, DC, Manassas. and Manassas Park. 

Wind gusts in southern Maryland could reach 60 miles per hour, so a high wind advisory has been issued. 

The forecast for Halloween weekend

Temperatures on Friday will be near 65 degrees Fahrenheit for the Washington region. 

Drizzle and cloudy skies will remain in the area on Saturday with highs in the 60s F.
