Everyone experiences games a little differently, and some Callisto Protocol players have apparently found themselves throwing misshapen meat monsters into a floor-to-ceiling shredding machine and thinking, “I wish this was harder. .” Those players are in luck: the sci-fi horror game has received a new update that not only adds a harder “hardcore” mode, but also a New Game + hardcore.
“Hardcore mode is not for the faint-hearted,” warns developer Striking Distance in the Callisto Protocol version 3.02 update. It is “meant to push you to your limits”, thus making Jacob Lee weaker and his enemies tougher.
In hardcore mode, you’ll have a harder time finding things like ammo and health replenishment, and some of the Biophages won’t drop any loot. These enemies will do more damage when hitting you, and your stun baton won’t deal as much. Enemies will mutate faster and the value of contraband you pick up will be reduced.
In return, however, you’ll have new achievements to hunt down, as well as the promise of another challenge waiting for you at the end of the tunnel: the hardcore New Game+ mode. You will need to complete a full match in extreme mode to unlock it.
The patch also brings some welcome fixes and tweaks: on PC you can expect improved ray tracing performance, and enemy combat AI should be better when surrounded by a bunch of nasty creatures.
The patch also brings Steam Deck-specific improvements, such as better font and UI rendering and an updated control scheme.
Season Pass owners also get access to the new Outer Way skin collection with this update.
