US President Joe Biden on Sunday supported the will of his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodimir Zelensky, to achieve “a just peace” based on the fundamental principles of the United Nations Charter.

“President Biden welcomed President Zelensky’s declared openness to a just peace based on the fundamental principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter,” the White House said in a statement.

In his telephone conversation, held on the eve of the virtual G7 summit, Biden also stressed his country’s commitment to continue offering Ukraine economic, humanitarian and defensive aid and to hold Russia accountable “for its crimes against war and atrocities”.

The US president spoke with his counterpart to reiterate his country’s support for defending Ukraine as that country continues to suffer attacks on its critical infrastructure.

That backing recently materialized in another $275 million in military aid announced Friday and earmarked specifically for bolstering its air defenses, or another $53 million to bolster its energy infrastructure, which were made public on Nov. 29.

Biden, as that note added, conveyed that his country gives priority to efforts to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense.

Zelensky, for his part, pointed out on Twitter that his conversation was “fruitful” and that it served to coordinate positions before the G7 summit and to talk about greater cooperation on security and protection of its energy sector.

He also thanked his counterpart “for confirming his willingness to support Ukraine as long as it is necessary, as well as the clear and constant commitment of the United States to the principle of sovereignty and territorial integrity (…) within internationally recognized borders.”

The Ukrainian president assured that “the leadership of the United States remains firm.”

“We are talking about greater cooperation in the defense, protection and maintenance of our energy sector. Coordinated positions on the eve of the G7 online summit ″, he noted.

The preview the G7

The Ukrainian president did not only speak with his American counterpart this Sunday. As part of the talks prior to the G7 summit, which will take place in Paris on Tuesday the 13th, Zelensky spoke by phone with the French president, Emmanuel Macron.

“We have prepared with President Zelensky the conferences that France will host on Tuesday,” Macron announced on Twitter.

The first meeting will be at the international level, with the participation of countries and organizations, with the aim of increasing and coordinating aid so that the Ukrainian population can spend the winter in the face of systematic Russian attacks against energy, water and transport infrastructures.

The second will be bilateral and will bring together French companies that want to participate in the reconstruction of Ukraine and its infrastructure, even before the end of the war.

“Ukraine will be able to count on France’s support for as long as it takes until its sovereignty and territorial integrity are fully restored,” Macron said.

This is the 43rd telephone or in-person conversation that both leaders have held in the last year, Elysee sources specified.

For his part, Zelensky pointed out that he and Macron “synchronized positions” ahead of the virtual G7 summit, which will also take place on the 13th, to discuss support for Ukraine.

“We talked about the implementation of our ten-step formula for peace, and about Ukraine’s defense and energy security cooperation,” Zelensky added about the conversation with the French president.
