WASHINGTON (AP) – Vice President Mike Pence telephoned Vice President-elect Kamala Harris to offer her congratulations and assistance with her transition to office, revealed two people who were not authorized to speak publicly from the private conversation and who asked anonymity.

Pence’s call was made less than a week before President-elect Joe Biden and Harris take office. The transfer of power is next Wednesday.

The call is the first contact between an outgoing government official and the incoming government’s elected officials. President Donald Trump has not approached his successor in office and has repeatedly questioned the legitimacy of Biden’s victory.

Trump will not attend the takeover. Pence will be there.
