Police came to this apartment complex thinking someone was being held in an apartment against their will, but when they arrived they found it was an unlicensed surgical recovery center .
Maidelys Sánchez ended up behind bars, police say, for operating a recovery center for patients who had recently had plastic surgery without a license.
The arrest report states that this Tuesday, detectives arrived at a residential complex located in the 7771 block of Northwest Seventh Street in Miami Dade…there they found the 38-year-old woman who was leading the illegal installation in an apartment… Instead there were several women in different stages of recovery.
“In fact, what was happening in that apartment…was an apartment that was used for the recovery of patients who had undergone surgery,” said Alvaro Zabaleta, spokesman for the Miami Dade police.
Patients who received help at this apartment complex say that the staff there helped them with different services, including helping them:
• Bath
• Currency exchange
• They gave them food
• Your medications
• Transportation
“There were 8 patients inside that apartment, 3 employees who were there, none of them were trained, they didn’t have certifications, they didn’t have licenses,” Zavaleta says.
Patients who received treatment also reported paying between $1,600 and $2,100 for care services.
But that was not all, researchers discovered that medical waste from these procedures was disposed of improperly…
“They throw away what have always been material things, which have blood or bodily fluids in them, things that should be thrown away in a different way,” Zavaleta says.
County police say they take these types of cases very seriously and are asking the community to report any other unlicensed centers by calling the Miami Dade County Hotline at (305) 471-8477.
