A shooting near a nightclub in Tennessee in the early hours of this Sunday left three dead and 14 people wounded by gunshots and other injuries , police said.

Fourteen people were hit by bullets and three by vehicles trying to flee the scene , Chattanooga Police Chief Celeste Murphy said at a news conference.

Two people died from gunshot wounds and one from being struck by a vehicle , Murphy said. Sixteen of the victims were adults and one was a minor. Several were in critical condition.

Officers responding to a report of shots fired near a nightclub found numerous victims. They immediately rushed to provide aid and surround the place.

Multiple people fired shots, Murphy said, but police believe it was an isolated incident and people are no longer in danger. “We’re trying to figure out exactly what happened and how it got into this situation,” he said.

Last weekend, six teenagers were shot in the same area, in downtown Chattanooga, during a confrontation between two large groups.

On Saturday night, a similar episode was recorded, but in Philadelphia , in the northeastern United States, when at least three people died and 11 were injured. “ We know that 14 people were shot and taken to hospitals. Three of those individuals, two men and one woman, were pronounced dead after arriving at hospitals with multiple gunshot wounds, ” police inspector DF Pace told the press.

These incidents occur 10 days after the  shooting at Robb Elementary School in the city of Uvalde , Texas, where an 18-year-old man barricaded himself in the educational center and killed 21 people  -19 children and two of their teachers- .

This case has sparked  criticism in society and the political arena regarding access to weapons by the civilian population and those younger than them. However, members of the Republican Party pointed to the mental health condition of the perpetrator of the crime and opted to reinforce the safety of teachers in educational centers.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, there have been more than 230 mass shootings in the United States this year (those in which four or more people are injured or killed in a single event, not including the shooter).

These tragedies have prompted calls for tougher gun control legislation, albeit with little hope of breaking down partisan divisions in Congress.
