NEW YORK — Looking for the best places to live in the New York area? Your best bet may be to research Long Island, depending on the ranking of ranking.
On Niche’s list of the 25 Best Places to Live in the Metro Area, 14 of the places are in Nassau County, with Great Neck Gardens at the top. The thriving little village received A+ grades for schools and families, and an A for nightlife. Housing got a B+, while the only category that looked like it needed improvement was diversity, which got a B-.
Just behind was the nearby Great Neck Plaza; in fact, each of the top five spots in the Niche ranking went to locations in Nassau County.
The villages of Herricks and Syosset placed third and fourth respectively, while the village of Kensington placed fifth. Kensington was also ranked as the best place to raise a family in New York, according to Niche. Syosset was ranked the second-best place to raise a family in New York City, Niche found.
Based on these rankings, it’s no surprise that the website ranks Nassau as the best county in the state. Tompkins County, Albany County and Monroe County also topped the list.

Long Island’s Lake Success placed seventh, just ahead of Westchester County’s main entrance. The village of Hartsdale earned A or A- grades in all categories except nightlife, where Niche gave it a B+.
Manhattan was the only part of New York to make the list, ranking 14th. The city received A+ grades for diversity, nightlife, and being good for families, and a B+ for public schools, but for obvious reasons it got pretty poor scores for housing. , earning only a C-, according to Niche.
Two Manhattan neighborhoods are also on the list: Chelsea, at 21, and Morningside Heights, at 24.
