Horror is a difficult genre to work in anime, but even so, there are exponents who manage to work it one way or another.

Terror, surely the most difficult genre to express in a medium like anime, or at least that’s what I think. If I’m honest, terror, what is terror… it’s not that too many things happened with this medium, I don’t know if it was because of me or because of the character of the medium as such (because look how afraid I am of games of Supermassive Games). However, despite this, there are names that clearly fill a gap in this category, and today I want to bring you a good handle which seems to me to fulfill the function to the height.

These horror anime will give you a good (bad) time

For the avoidance of doubt, I tried to choose a series of anime that i believe expresses the concept of horror in different ways, going through both the violent and the simply “environmental”. So these anime might not be for everyone, but I hope I found one for each of you.

tokyo ghoul

I don’t think this one will surprise many people, whether they know it or have seen it before. Honestly, most of the anime on the list are selected more for how they “make you feel uncomfortable” than generating terror as such (I’ve said before that I find this difficult). However, with dark, silly and iconic that is “Tokyo Ghoul” (yes, I’m mostly talking about the first two seasons), I think that’s a great first option.

  • View in Selecta Vision BOX.
  • Synopsis of Tokyo Ghoul: The people of Tokyo live in terror: in the shadows of the metropolis lurk horrible monsters that blend in with the crowd, hunting and devouring human beings. A young man encounters one of these ghouls, but although he manages to survive, his existence will no longer be the same…

Higurashi when they cry

A story of pure death and destruction. I’ve seen loose things and the truth is that not for those looking for a slice of life story to munch on comfortably, despite what their character design may suggest. if what you want is a story without quarter for its charactersI assure you that “Higurashi When They Cry” is an option like few others.

  • Watch a Crunchyroll.
  • Synopsis: A new kid has come to town, Keiichi Maebara fears what dark secrets may be buried in the small, isolated town of Hinamizawa..

Freak

Sometimes terror doesn’t have to go hand in hand with supernatural creatures or things that can appeal to people’s phobias, sometimes it just takes multiple psychological twists. Indeed, in “Freak“we come across the story of a serial killer who, most of the time, will cause the feeling of having no way out, and always being within reach. It’s one of the best examples there is when it comes to scaring the viewer straight through the plot.

  • Away and Netflix.
  • Synopsis: Dr. Tenma finds himself on the adventure of his life after saving the life of Johan, a boy who came to his hospital with a gunshot wound to the head at the worst possible time. This fact triggers a whole series of events that will lead Dr. Tenma to travel the world while discovering Johan’s secret..

Berserk

Yes, I’m talking about the “Berserk” by Kentarou Miura why not, but the author knew how to create a series of truly terrifying fantastic creatures at the time. And not only: the cruelty of some of their scenes reaches a point where they exert a whirlwind of emotions among which you end up feeling an overwhelming terror towards what is represented. Guts’ journey is truly unforgettable, and its horror elements are also one of the points worth mentioning.

  • Away and Netflix.
  • Synopsis: Guts is a warrior dressed from head to toe in black who carries a gigantic sword longer than his own height and a sturdy iron prosthetic arm… Wherever he goes, rivers of blood and mountains of corpses form..

elf lied

It already advances that it is possibly the +18 by definition of the whole list, both for the beast of their gore performances and for the anime’s constant nudity. Honestly, it’s very uncomfortable, or at least it made me feel uncomfortable. Maybe more gore than horror (also very old science fiction), but if what you’re looking for is an anime that potentially makes you look away more than onceFor some reason, “Elfen Lied” more than answers that.

  • It is not legally available.
  • Synopsis: Elfen Lied is set in Kamakura, Japan, and focuses on a new evolutionary branch of the human race: Diclonius, beings similar to humans but genetically different. They also exhibit certain physical abnormalities, in particular a pair of short horn-like protrusions. Lucy, the protagonist, is a Diclonius. She is first locked up in an experimental laboratory, located off Kamakura, in Kanagawa prefecture… but she manages to escape..

Parasite

One of my favorites on the list, hand on chest. In this case, I also consider that we are much more in science fiction territory, but it’s clearly one of the most iconic of the genre. What “Parasyte” does best in terms of horror is surely to create that suspense in the face of the various dangers approaching the leading duo, apart from that yes, the designs of aliens and parasitized give a pretty bad vibe. As said: a recommendation of 10.

  • Watch a Crunchyroll.
  • Synopsis: Mysterious and brutal murders begin to take place on Earth. People don’t know it, but it’s caused by some kind of pest that happened. Gradually they begin to possess humans by penetrating through their ears and nostrils, adhering to their brains..

Mononoke

There is a clear conflict here, being that “Mononoke” is one of the most successful horror anime of all time… and I didn’t like it at all (which was supposed to generate something for me just turned into boredom). But since the list is not for me but for you, I am obliged to present it here. What I can say very positive about “Mononoke” is that only in terms of color design and direction it is the best there is in terms of horror anime.

  • It is not legally available.
  • Synopsis: The “Drug Salesman” is a deadly and mysterious occult master who travels across feudal Japan to kill malevolent spirits called “mononoke”. When you locate one, you can’t just kill it; he must first know their form, truth, and reason in order to wield the mighty sword of exorcism and fight them.

Mieruko-chan

“Mieruko-chan” has ecchi cuts that if she didn’t have them, absolutely nothing would happen, but I must say that his “terror” was the one i really liked. If you’re looking to see ‘monsters’ with that characteristic traditional Japanese style, “Mieruko-chan” is one of the most successful anime to date. Really, this seems the most “correct” on the list, but I consider its terrors to be the ones worth exploring.

  • Watch a Crunchyroll.
  • Synopsis: She can see the dead, but chooses to ignore them. That’s Miko’s plan, but it doesn’t seem to be working for her in this love letter to the horror genre that will send shivers down your spine and the occasional laugh..

Gantz

Once again between science fiction, gore and terror (and ecchi also the truth), “Gantz” is truly one of the most famous anime of this genre, and rightly so. In terms of production, the anime is nothing short of stellar, but it does have a unique proposition that it executes like a charm. If you are this cool with survival games“Gantz” is really an alternative that combines elements in a very interesting way.

  • Away and Netflix.
  • Synopsis: Kurono and Kato, old friends from elementary school, find themselves hit by a train as they prepare to help a drunk. However, after a while, they appear on nondescript ground. There, they are not alone: other people who also lived the moment before death accompany them, as well as a black sphere, Gantz, who tells them, without giving rise to any discussion, that it must be finished. …with the onion…!?

Uzumaki

We come to the last of the list and… I’m cheating; at least to date. yes it is more a recommendation for the future, since “Uzumaki” was released on a date yet to be determined, but it’s a name you MUST keep in mind. What is this anime? Well, Studio Drive’s elaborate adaptation of one of the most famous stories by Junji Ito, one of the most famous Japanese horror authors of all time. It’s risky to put him in such a list, but I’m convinced that when the time comes he will deserve it even more.

  • First (now) to be defined.
  • Synopsis: Kurouzu, a small town shrouded in mist on the coast of Japan, is cursed. According to Shuichi Saitô, the boyfriend of young Kirie Goshima, their house is haunted, not by a person, but by a motif: UZUMAKI, the spiral, the hypnotic secret that shapes the world.
