Orlando Florida- When Ana Guzmán, a 911 call system operator, answered an emergency call during her shift, the only thing she heard in the background was a GPS offering an address and, in the distance, the voice of a woman asking to be taken home.
Immediately, Guzmán knew that the victim in question could not speak and that he had to get carried away by what he heard in the distance. Time was pressing.
“They weren’t answering the call and I knew I had to stay on the line,” Guzmán said in a message posted online by the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.
“I heard a woman’s voice in the distance asking to be taken home, but the address she gave was not the same as the one heard on the GPS in the background,” the l ‘operator.
Guzmán then began to take note of what he could hear from the background GPS to find out where the woman on the other end of the line was while exchanging messages with the authorities to express what was going on. Thus, after a few minutes, the authorities were able to locate the vehicle in which the victim was traveling and stopped traffic.
When authorities arrived at the scene, Guzmán said, the woman said she had been raped. The driver of the car has been taken into custody and a second suspect is still under investigation.
“I’m grateful that I decided to stay online a bit longer to realize what was going on,” Guzmán said.
The operator received the “Outstanding Public Safety Professional” award for her work during this call.
Authorities did not provide further details about the incident or when it occurred.
