Oscar-nominated films and two Spanish productions among the week’s top cinematic releases

Until the crime that changed everything

The film tells the story of Emmett Louis Till and the legacy of his mother, who sought justice for her murdered son. June, being in her hometown of Los Angeles, must use all the technology at her disposal to find her before it’s too late. Mummies is one of the most ambitious animated films made in Spain since Tadeo Jones. Its manager is John Jesus Garcia Galocha and explains that the project is part of the “burst” what has been happening in Spanish animation in recent years, a path that “in the long term, ever higher quality product will be seen”. In the movie, three mummies living in ancient Egypt travel to London today to retrieve a device that was stolen by an archaeologist.

Irati

Fantasy film of Basque production which received the audience award for best film and best special effects at the Sitges Fantastic Film Festivalin addition to 5 nominations for the Goya Awards 2023. The film is shot in Basque and is set in the 8th century, when Christianity was spreading throughout Europe and pagan beliefs threatened to disappear. Years after the attack of the army of Charlemagne through the Pyrenees, Eneko must recover the body of his father as well as the treasure of Charlemagne. Already raised in the Christian faith, he will discover the pagan beliefs of his people and the pact made by his father to protect them.

The quiet girl

It is nominated for Best International Film at the 2023 Oscars and also has two BAFTA nominations. Set in rural Ireland in 1981. Little Cáit is sent to live with distant relatives, away from her dysfunctional family.
