NEW YORK — A parent’s worst nightmare happened to a Bronx couple Thursday night when their vehicle was stolen with their eight-month-old baby inside.

The incident happened just before 10:30 p.m. near the intersection of East 175th Street and Mohegan Avenue in the Bronx.

The suspect abandoned the car a few yards away. The suspect left the scene on foot and the baby was not injured, police said.

Authorities said the parents were removing shopping bags from the car while the daughter was sitting in the back of the vehicle when the suspect jumped behind the wheel and drove off.

The organization Child and car safety warns that this is a dangerous situation because:

  • Every week vehicles are stolen with children
  • It happens even in the safest neighborhoods
  • It only takes a few seconds for a thief to get away with his car and his child inside.

Police advise to always turn off the car and remove the keys when leaving the vehicle.

Authorities described the suspect as a man wearing a white hoodie.

Anyone with information that could lead to an arrest should call 1-888-57-TRACK.
