NEW JERSEY — Authorities in a New Jersey community are responding to a series of apparent sewer explosions that sparked street fires on Friday, including those of a vehicle and a taxi. The Telemundo 47 helicopter captured images of the flames.
There was no immediate word on the possible cause of the explosions, which rocked East Orange, summit street there North Munn Avenuearound 8:30 a.m.
It was not clear if the buildings were affected. There was also no immediate word on whether there were any potential injuries.
Thick smoke, black as midnight, rose into the air and engulfed the entire neighborhood, helicopter footage showed. Fire hoses lay in the streets when paramedics arrived at the scene. Several blown manhole covers were seen.
Roads have been closed in the area. No other details were immediately available.
