At a Broward School Board meeting, two issues stood out today. First, that of safety in schools. The Broward Association of Chiefs of Police representative expressed frustration at the inability to reach a working agreement with the district and the second – on sex education.
The head of the police association told the Broward School Board today that in May last year they began negotiating a working agreement to continue posting an officer to each school.
“But it looks like the contract isn’t that urgent,” said Hollywood Police Chief Chris O’Brien, who explained that municipalities have met school officer salaries.
The employment contract would be to assign 200 officers throughout the district. During the meeting, school board members expressed concern about not only complying with state law, but also what they consider to be the most important thing: campus safety.
We need to show school officials that we value them when it comes to safety. You have to consider the illegal transport law, what happened in Nashville and what happened here in Broward.
Finally, the council made a decision
“We had offered $68,000 per officer and the board decided to offer $75,000 per officer,” Jaime Alberti said.
Another topic discussed today was adherence to state standards for teaching sex education. So far, the district has followed the national standard.
It teaches them abstinence which prevents sexually transmitted diseases, but at the same time offers instructions on how to have safe sex and the consequences.
Now that will have to change, according to the Broward School Board, the district will only be able to teach abstinence.
