An organization in the San Fernando Valley offers help to victims of domestic violence and their families in the Los Angeles area.
Safe Passages offers programs aimed at breaking the cycle of domestic violence, through healing and empowerment workshops.
This allows women to start a new life, safely and productively.
Dr. Partida explains what it is and what the different types of domestic violence are, as well as the signs we can notice if a loved one is suffering from violence.
The organization also offers the Emergency Shelter, where women stay for 30 days and offer resources they can use to get their lives back. To request assistance from this shelter, you can call 1-800-799-7233.
“This program aims to help women, motivate them to be independent and get their self-esteem to the level where they can do more,” Villalpando said.
domestic violence symptoms
Villalpando points out that women who experience domestic violence may reflect symptoms such as depression, low self-esteem and a lack of control over their lives.
The victim of this type of abuse usually does not express how she feels. This is why Villalpando advises observing people to determine if they are going through this problem.
“If you’re a friend or relative, see if their self-esteem has gone down, if they’re depressed, if they don’t want to socialize with other people anymore,” advises Villalpando.
Experts and survivors of this stigma offer advice for people who may be dealing with this issue.
The abuse suffered by women at home is also reflected in children.
It affects them too much. Also at school,” says Villalpando. “It’s a behavior that can also be learned and, as mothers, we have to protect the children so that they don’t see it.”
types of domestic violence
Villalpando points out that domestic violence, in addition to being physical, where the partner hits the woman, can also be emotional, with insults and phrases that demotivate the woman.
But financial control is also put forward, in order to take away the independence of the victim.
“They don’t even have access to $5 and it affects them too much,” says Villalpando. “It’s often (the reason) why they don’t leave this relationship.
Many undocumented immigrants are victims of domestic violence and remain silent for fear of deportation. Yet the law protects them.
