Actor Richard Belzer, historic face of the television crime series Law & Order, has died at the age of 78. This was confirmed in a note from his agent. Belzer is best remembered for starring as Detective John Munch for over 20 years, most notably in the spin-off series Special Victims Unit.
Born as a comedian, Belzer characterized his character with a marked irony that made him a popular stand-up in New York theaters. It was precisely these skills on stage that had allowed him to appear several times on Saturday Night Live.
According to Bill Scheft, a writer and close friend of his, Belzer had “a lot of health issues,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. The actor died in Bozouls (France), where he had decided to settle a long time ago.
This is how Richard Belzer was remembered by his colleagues at Law & Order
He also reminded Belzer of, among others, his colleague Mariska Hargitay, known for her role as Olivia Benson in Law & Order – Special Victims Unit:
“Hi dear friend. I will miss you, your unique light and unique insight into this strange world. I feel blessed to have known, adored and worked with you, side by side, for so many years.”
Belzer was a cousin of Henry Winkler, the famous Fonzie from Happy Days. In addition to the role in Law & Order that made him famous, Belzer had appeared in Sesame Street, Miami Vice, 30 Rock and The Wire. He had also been one of the interpreters of the film Scarface by Brian De Palma.

The Detective Munch character that made him famous first appeared in the series Homicide: Life on the Streets, which aired on NBC from 1993 to 1999. But it was the spin-off Special Victims Unit, in which Belzer starred for 326 episodes until 2016, that made the figure of the ironic and scathing detective world famous.
