The industry began 2022 as it ended last year, with a new record rise in prices. The Industrial Price Index (PRI) continues its climb and increased five tenths compared to December to stand at 35.7%, the highest year-on-year increase since the beginning of the statistical series in January 1976, according to what the Institute reported this Friday. National Statistics (INE). In 2021 as a whole, the industry raised its prices by 35.2 compared to 2020 (the figure was revised down seven tenths).

The most determining sectors in this rise were Intermediate goods, whose variation stood at 21.7%, more than one point above that of the previous month and the highest since December 1977, as a result of increases in the prices of the manufacture of products for animal feed and the manufacture of milling products, starches and starchy products, higher this month than in January 2021.

The rise in Non-durable consumer goods was also decisive, with a rate of 6.1%, nine tenths higher than that of December, caused, for the most part, by the increase in the prices of the manufacture of beverages, which They were down the previous year.

The only industrial sector with a negative influence was Energy, which decreased its variation by more than two points, to 91.4%. This behavior is due to the drop in the prices of the production, transmission and distribution of electricity, compared to the rise in January 2021.

The annual variation rate of the general index excluding Energy increased more than one point, to 12.0%, standing 23.7 points below that of the general IPRI. This rate is the highest since September 1984.

The annual rate of the IPRI increased in January compared to December in nine autonomous communities and decreased in the remaining eight.

The greatest increases occurred in the Basque Country, La Rioja and the Valencian Community, with rises of 4.2, 3.9 and 3.4 points, respectively. For their part, the greatest decreases were registered in the Canary Islands, Illes Balears and Principado de Asturias, with decreases of 18.9, 13.8 and 13.8 points, respectively.
