Apple’s rumor mill has been fuming lately, so it’s natural to be a little skeptical of any leaks coming out on iPhone. The last one has to do with the cameras, and it comes from leaker Revegnus (@Tech_Reve on the social network Twitter).
Revegnus has uncovered quite a bit of information about the world of smartphones in recent months, but it has a rather short track record compared to other leak heavyweights, such as OnLeaks or IceUniverse. From what he tells us, the iPhone 15 Pro Max (or Ultra) could come with a telephoto lens with a variable zoom lens.
The Galaxy S23 Ultra from Samsung is the zoom king today, and features a 10MP telephoto lens with 3x zoom and a 10MP periscope camera with 10x optical zoom. In contrast, the iPhone 14 Pro Max 2022 can only zoom up to 3x optically.
A few recent rumors suggest that the Galaxy S24 Ultra will only feature a variable zoom camera, merging two sensors into onelosing a camera along the way, and it looks like the iPhone 15 Pro will also take the same approach.
A variable zoom cameralike the Sony Xperia 1 III, can switch between two focal lengths. The phone has movable glass to give you two different zooms (3x and 4.4x) and you can digitally zoom between them.

It’s not the same as the Xperia 1 IV’s continuous zoom range, where the range is smooth and the lens functions as a full-size zoom lens.
If the leak is legitimate, the iPhone 15 Pro Max will offer versatility, essentially having the equivalent of two telephoto lenses. The iPhone 14 Pro Max’s camera bump is already quite large, so Apple would opt for a telephoto lens with an optically adjusted focal length, rather than equipping its next phone with two telephoto lenses.
This could go up a notch to win the title of the best camera phone of the year. Revegnus also hints that the iPhone 15 Pro Max will have the same image sensors as its predecessor, which means it would be a 48MP main camera setup, 12MP wide-angle and 12MP telephoto.
Most published reports indicate that the new periscopic lens will be exclusive to the Pro Max modelwhich could be renamed Ultra if the rumors were true, and the Pro model would have to settle for something a bit more modest.
We are not talking about the other models (standard and Plus) at this time, but there is usually quite a distance between these and the two more expensive onesand it doesn’t look like Apple will change its strategy this year.
