NEW JERSEY — Authorities have launched an investigation after a deadly shooting involving police took place Friday in Paterson.
According to the preliminary investigation, the shooting occurred around 12:30 p.m. on Friday. in a 29-unit apartment building in the Mill and Ellison Streets area of Paterson.
The shooting left one dead and his identity has not yet been made public. The victim was pronounced dead after being transported to St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Paterson.
According to the investigations, the man tried to set fire to an apartment. Authorities received an emergency call for a mentally ill man attempting to set the house on fire.
“They had been negotiating with him for hours,” Paterson Councilman Luis Velez said. “The police responded to the attack. He is dead and the officers have deep wounds.”
The investigation is ongoing and no further information is released at this time.
