This Monday, like every First of Maymuch of the world celebrates the international workers daya date on which the labor movement from different parts of the planet unites to make its voice heard in favor of workers’ rights and to defend the struggle of those who are called “Chicago Martyrs” in the Haymarket Riot.
These martyrs were eight workers who, in the May 1, 1886 they joined strikes taking place across the city of Chicago to demand an eight-hour workday. After an unknown man detonated a bomb in Haymarket Square and killed a police officer, they were accused of planting the device and five of the eight were sentenced to death.
Three years after the troubles, the Second International decided, at its Paris Congress, to decree the May 1 as a global day of protestand a year later, 1980, in Spain, Workers’ Day was celebrated for the first time.
Since then, almost every year, workers in our country have staged mobilizations and taken to the streets to continue to demonstrate the strength of the labor movement and demand improvements in working conditions.
