Police have revealed details of the brutal attack on the owners of the well-known farmhouse and bakery, Knaus Berry Farms, located in Homestead, allegedly by his own son.
Travis Grafe, 40, the son of Knaus Berry Farm owners, is in jail and faces various charges including attempted murder, aggravated assault and robbery; all of these were related to the alleged February 17 attack.
The incident happened at the residence in the 24500 block of 157th Avenue SW, where Rachel Knaus Grafe was found unconscious on the floor in a pool of her own blood. While Herbert Grafe, her husband and father of the alleged attacker, was also hospitalized with head injuries.
In a statement, Travis Grafe, the couple’s son, admitted to beating his mother because she was his legal guardian and he no longer wanted her to be. But a witness to the violent incidents told investigators he heard Grafe tell the father he had killed his mother and wanted money or he would kill him too.
The family friend told our sister network NBC 6 that as a teenager, Grafe suffered a traumatic brain injury.
Records revealed previous arrests of the suspect, including a 2013 arrest for robbery, assault and battery that was later dismissed.
Meanwhile, court records showed Rachel Grafe sued Miami-Dade Corrections in 2016 after her son was allegedly injured while in custody. She accused the prison of not having enough resources for people with traumatic brain injuries. The case was solved last year.
