- Taxpayers affected by the recent storms will have until October 16 to file their taxes.
- In Southern California, those who live in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura counties will be able to apply for the extension.
- Affected taxpayers will be required to submit repair receipts for damage deduction.
Taxpayers affected by the recent storms will have a new extension to file their tax return, according to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
Victims who benefit from the extension can also deduct damage caused by floods, landslides and even tornadoes.
“These people have until October 16 to file their taxes, even if they have to,” said Catalina Martinez, spokeswoman for the California Franchise Tax Board.
The tax filing deadline is approaching. An IRS spokesperson explains what the most common mistakes are and how to avoid making them.
Residents of more than fifty Golden State counties will be able to take advantage of the expansion. In Southern California, those who live in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura counties will be able to apply for the extension.
“Our system will automatically detect that this person is in the area that has been declared a disaster. So there is nothing to do,” Martinez said.
Those who suffered property damage from winter storms last year will be eligible for deductions on their 2022 tax return.
Taxpayers who have already filed their 2022 tax return can request an amendment, in the event that they have recently suffered damage.
“Especially if they haven’t been reimbursed for that damage,” Martinez said. “It’s important that you file them as losses as deductions during your tax season for this year.”
Taxpayers affected by recent natural disasters will be required to submit repair receipts for damage deduction.
All immigrants, with or without a social security number, must file a tax return, and to do so they need special identification. Telemundo 52 Responde explains how to get it.
The spokesperson for the California Franchise Tax Board assures that the taxpayer’s immigration status does not matter.
“They just have to have an ITIN (number) to file their taxes here in California,” Martinez said. “They don’t need any other kind of documents.”
The tax return extension is federal and state for disaster areas in California.
