NEW YORK – With market prices rising and the economy slowing, many are looking for ways to save when shopping.

One of the ways to do this is to know what to do so that electricity bills don’t get so expensive.

Electrical engineer Javier Dasí shares some recommendations with us.

How can we save energy with our appliances?

  1. With the dishwasher: When we use programs that wash in hot water in one hour, we consume twice as much energy as a 3-hour program in cold water. In other words, use programs that don’t waste hot water.
  2. The heater: The more we use the temperature of the heater, the more it saves because otherwise it must stay 24 hours keeping the water temperature very high and if we set it to a lower temperature we will save more energy.
  3. The washing machine: Also avoid hot water programs. Cold water consumes half or less.
  4. Refrigerator: Each time it is opened, the motor is switched on. So think before we want to take it out and not leave it open.

To avoid having to resort to credit cards or loans to cover an unexpected expense, these recommendations can help you build that savings base. Video by Jacqueline Mata. For more information, visit cnbc.com/espanol
