NEW YORK – This is good news for those who work as lifeguards at New York’s pools and beaches during the summer season.

This is because new and second year seasonal lifeguard wage rates will be increased to approximately $21.26. Additionally, all lifeguards working through mid-August are now eligible for a $1,000 bonus.

The changes come as the city’s parks department has reached an agreement with the DC37 union for the wage increase, parks commissioner Sue Donoghue announced.

Additionally, the Department of Parks will once again offer wading-pool-specific lifeguard certification for personnel covering only wading pools, making it more affordable for New Yorkers to obtain lifeguard employment.

“Our public pools and beaches provide New Yorkers with a safe place to exercise, beat the heat and make the most of their summers,” said New York City Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue. “The well-being of our swimmers is our number one priority, and lifeguards are essential to creating safe environments that all New Yorkers can enjoy. As we continue to grow our body of lifeguards, we are committed to supporting this essential personnel who put their own safety at risk to save lives and make summer a reality for millions of New Yorkers.

Qualifying exams for new lifeguards took place beginning in December 2022 and ending in March 2023.

However, New Yorkers who worked as lifeguards in the summer of 2022 can register for recertification with the New York City Parks Lifeguard School so they can serve again this summer.
