One woman died and at least 12 others were injured after multiple vehicles collided on Interstate 25 near Castle Pines on Monday morning, South Metro Fire Rescue said.

The Colorado State Patrol reported that a first vehicle struck a deer in the southbound lanes of I-25. The driver who struck the deer got out of the vehicle and was then hit by another vehicle, throwing her into the northbound lanes of I-25. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

Another 12 people were injured in the incident, but the conditions of the people who were injured are not known as of yet. It was unclear if the injured people were inside or outside the vehicles when they were injured, authorities reported.

The accident occurred just before 1 a.m., causing southbound closures of I-25 for more than six hours. The Colorado State Patrol said drugs or alcohol are not believed to have been factors in the crash.
