Inclement weather temporarily halted flights and vehicle traffic at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport due to heavy rains in South Florida on Wednesday.

The airport tweeted that Fort Lauderdale Airport was closed to flights and road traffic until further notice due to heavy rain and flooding.

Officials have urged travelers not to attempt to enter or exit the airport due to flooding on the roads leading to the terminal.

Travelers were also urged to check with their airlines for flight status. The ground transportation system has also been temporarily suspended.

The National Weather Service reported that the water reached near the top of the car tires. Unofficial rain measurements predict that at least 10 inches have fallen so far.

For their part, Miami International Airport officials said there were two short periods of flight delays due to lightning, but no flight cancellations.

Multiple tornado, flash flood and thunderstorm warnings were issued throughout the day in South Florida as heavy rain hit the area for the third straight day.
