In recent years, we will have received several films and series titled Obsession or in a similar way. Obviously, creativity is not on the agenda, but it would be a shame to miss out on this British mini-series created by Lisa Barros D’Sa there Glenn Leyburn and featuring Indira Varma there Charlie Murphy. Obviously, he does not invent the wheel and it is one more erotic drama, in the same way as sex/life he was successful for two seasons. But the screenwriters know how to adapt the homonymous novel written by Josephine Hartwithout extending the frames too much.
The new version of Obsession that no one expected for Netflix
In the 90s, Jeremy Irons there Juliette Binoche starred in a film adaptation titled Hurtbut based on the same novel by Josephine Hart. On this occasion, we tried to exploit the romantic side of the characters, leaving aside the obsessive and toxic component of the two protagonists. But Obsession makes it clear that William and Anna are dangerous people, who put their decisions ahead of the possible consequences they may have.. They don’t mind ruining their lives, as long as they can get their needs met.
It also changes the approach with which sex is treated, bet on fairly explicit and dirty scenes, but without achieving the pornographic component that some viewers will be looking for. In this sense, it seems to me a braver series than, for example, 50 shades of gray and substitutes. A fiction that does not mince its words to show the sexual obsession of its two protagonists, in every sense of the word.
The dramatic component of Obsession and the consequences of this relationship on an entire family is an important part of the scenario. Obviously, William there Anna they commit deplorable acts that can harm their loved ones, so it is surprising how everything gradually breaks down, breaking the stability that William had and never knew how to value. And it is that when we meet Ingrid, everything seems to indicate that the two are part of a marriage without cracks or wounds, but the arrival of Anna complicates everything, so much so that we have begun to take an interest in the character of William with disgust.
Obsession isn’t so bad, and its duration helps
Obsession is a 4 episode miniseries, but it could well be a 150 minute movie, because that’s how long all the episodes are.. And it is precisely this duration that benefits the umpteenth adaptation of the novel written by Josephine Hartbecause instead of contributing subplots you are not interested in, the script always goes to the essential.
It’s clear that obsession is not perfectand it is that since Hurt created in 1992, 31 years have passed with more than similar films and series. But Netflix’s new job meets the minimum that could be asked of it.
