A warning of hazardous weather conditions known as a ‘blizzard’ or blizzard is approaching Southern California.

“A change in weather patterns will bring rain and snow to Southwestern California this week, particularly Thursday and Friday, with the possibility of continuing through the weekend,” the report reported. National Weather Service (NWS).

Light rain or drizzle is expected on Wednesday, with totals ranging from 2 to 4 inches, Telemundo 52 meteorologist Marcos Mora reported.

Additionally, “snow levels will fall to unusually low levels, which could bring snowfall to 1,000 feet on Wednesday. There may be a few inches of snow between 1,000 and 2,500 feet, 1 to 3 feet between 4,000 and 6,000 feet and up to 7 feet above 6,000 feet,” according to the NWS.

Winds will also be present with gusts between 55 and 75 miles per hour (mph) in the mountains and 35-55 mph in the valleys and coasts.

Weather conditions are expected to intensify between Friday and Saturday. “Due to the possibility of high winds and snowfall, a blizzard warning has been issued for the mountains of Los Angeles and Ventura counties from 4 a.m. Friday to 4 p.m. Saturday. Accumulations of snow are expected. up to 5 feet and wind gusts over 55 mph,” reported el NWS.

These conditions could result in the closure of major roads and highways, including the Grapevine Pass and Tejón area on Highway 5, among others.

“There is potential for widespread snow impacts and road closures, including blizzard conditions and the threat of landslides. Due to high winds, trees and power lines may be downed,” according to the NWS.

Caltrans reported Wednesday afternoon that “snowflakes are falling at Badger Pass on Interstate 5.” In addition, they asked to travel more slowly in the area and to review the maps with the road closures.

Driving Precautions

The Automobile Agency of America (AAA) has released some precautionary measures for drivers in the midst of winter storms or heavy snowfall.

Before leaving your home:

  • Make sure the tires are inflated and in good condition.
  • Check that the snow chains are in good condition and that you know how to use them.
  • Clear your vehicle of ice or snow from all windows for good visibility.
  • Keep the windshield defroster function in good condition.

When you are on the road:

  • Check the weather conditions for the road you are going to travel to find out if there are any closure alerts.
  • Stay away from big trucks. Be especially careful on bridges and overpasses.
  • Turn on your car’s headlights.
  • Drive at a slow speed which will allow you to have more control over your vehicle.
  • Brake carefully to avoid skidding on the road.
  • Watch out for icy roads. “Be especially careful on bridges and overpasses, which freeze before the roads,” according to AAA.
