Apple said the benefits would not automatically apply to its only union store in Towson, Maryland. They had to negotiate for themselves through their union.

The technology company Apple is expanding benefits to all employees, except those who work in its only unionized store.

Sources consulted by Bloomberg said that the technology giant communicated to its employees that is increasing the amount of funding they can receive for outside education and increased health care benefits for some states.

In the announcement, Apple said that the fringe benefits would not automatically apply to their only union store in Towson, Maryland. They had to negotiate for themselves through their union, according to the specialized finance media.

Upon the news, the members of the unionized store, known as IAM CORE, issued a statement in which they invite the technology company to work on a negotiation in the near future.

“Despite the news from Apple, our goal remains the same. We urge Apple to negotiate in good faith so that we can reach an agreement in the coming weeks.”said.

He later added: “The IAM CORE bargaining committee is dedicated to securing an agreement that gives our IAM CORE members due respect and dignity on the job and sets the standard in the tech industry.”

Workers at the Townson Town Center Apple Store joined the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Union on June 18, 2022.

Last May union members sent a letter to Apple CEO Tim Cook informing them of their desire to organize their union. In the request it highlights “Access to rights that we currently do not have.”

Although Apple announced in past months that it will raise the wages of its corporate workers at the end of 2022, bringing the salary to $22, instead of $20, it may not be enough.

Union organizing efforts have been launched at various Apple locations to the extent that other organizing attempts have been reported in Atlanta in the past few months, later withdrawn citing intimidation.
