The Manuel Dominguez High School campus in Compton will be closed on Tuesday following a massive fire in the cafeteria that sent large plumes of smoke into the air and left firefighters battling the flames for hours .

The fire was first reported at 7:12 p.m. Monday at the school, located at 15301 S. San Jose Ave., a Compton Fire Department dispatcher told the City News Service.

It was not immediately clear what started the fire.

A total of seven people were injured in a house fire in South Los Angeles. Two people were seriously injured and five others were examined and refused to be taken to hospital.

Firefighters called for reinforcements at 7:37 p.m., the dispatcher said.

The Los Angeles County and Downey County Fire Departments provided mutual aid to the Compton Fire Department. Video from the location showed a partial roof collapse.

Firefighters remained at the school until 3:15 a.m. Tuesday to ensure any hot spots were extinguished.

No injuries were reported.

The Compton Unified School District confirmed on Facebook that the fire was in the cafeteria and noted that the school was closed Monday for the Presidents Day holiday.

Just after 11 p.m. Monday, the district announced that classes would be canceled Tuesday on the advice of building security and fire department personnel.

Flames spread from the vacant home to two garden-style apartment buildings with central hallways at 245 and 259 S. Reno St., according to the LAFD.

“We are grateful that no injuries have been reported, as well as our school and district community, which have already come together to begin planning for the resumption of teaching,” officials said.

Staff were to receive instructions on when and where to report for work, and students could eat breakfast and lunch at William Jefferson Clinton Elementary School at 6500 E. Compton Blvd.
