Two students were stabbed in an attack outside Los Angeles High School on Monday afternoon, authorities said.

The teenage pair were in stable condition after the attack near the intersection of Olympic and Rimpau Boulevards in the Mid-Wilshire area, Los Angeles Police Department captain Sonia Monico said. The attack took place around 4:30 p.m., he added.

In a written statement, Los Angeles Unified Superintendent Alberto Carvalho said the incident “made no sense.”

“Our hearts go out to both victims and their families. All of our students deserve to go to school free from fear and full of hope. We must work together to continue to provide safe passage to and from school,” Superintendent Carvalho said mental health counselors and support will be available at the school on Tuesday.

Monica said the victims and the shooter knew each other. However, an arrest was not immediately reported.

The police captain said the department will add patrols in the morning, during school and after school for the rest of the week.
