There’s more talk about Activision Blizzard today, and that’s because the UK Competition and Markets Authority has made more recent documents available to the public, including responses from Microsoft and Sony.
Perhaps the most interesting new documents relate to six companies that lent their support to the acquisition. One of them is 4J Studios, which has worked on several ports for Xbox, including Banjo-Kazooie there perfect darkness in the past, while the other five were submitted anonymously by developers and publishers.
Here are some examples of the documents in question:
4J studies: “We do not view the proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard as anything other than a natural evolution of the industry and gives us no reason to be concerned about our own future opportunities.”
Participant B: “We don’t believe any title can be considered a ‘must have’ in the interactive entertainment market…We don’t believe the proposed transaction will have a negative impact on consumers.”
Participant C: “In my experience with them over the past 25 years, Microsoft always honors its contracts and obligations. When they say they intend to make Call of Duty content available on Sony and Nintendo platforms, I believe them and I think it’s in their interest as well as in the interest of the industry.”
Participant E: “The acquisition won’t suddenly make Xbox the dominant platform. It’s much more likely that it could help create a more level playing field between Xbox and PlayStation that, right now, is badly needed. PlayStation needs of better competition. , to force the platform to improve its game, and it will surely help to do so.
A few interesting comments, then, will hopefully help Microsoft close this deal with the CMA in the weeks ahead. The deadline for the regulator’s decision is currently April 26, 2023.
If you want to read the latest public responses to the CMA, you can find them all on the UK government website…just be aware that some of them are extremely long!
