The Sims 4 Kids update is almost here, and developer EA Maxis has given us a full preview of all the adorable additions coming to the free PC game in just a few short weeks. This big free update includes a ton of new baby-focused features, and “Sims Gurus” Graham Nardone and Morgan walk us through The Sims items, traits, gameplay details, and more in a Sims Stream. live.
First, a huge set of items included in the update, which will be available in build and buy modes. There’s so much here that the team is packing two floors of items in all their different shades of color. These include the first new crib added since launch, cute shelves, cute rug designs, trays full of baby items and stuffed animals, giant llama dolls and laundry baskets and animal themed lamps.
We also received three sensory development toys with new sound. There are cribs that can be upgraded as your baby grows into a toddler and a special ‘travel crib’ design. The new baby gate and playpen options are available in a wide range of colors; they also include a new ‘baby proof’ option which allows them to act as a convenient way to keep your children in the baby jail while the rest of the family comes and goes.
You will now have the option of having a “Scientific Baby” alone or with a partner of your choice, whether or not you are in a romantic relationship with them. This opens up much more potential for personalized storytelling, “whether it’s a same-sex relationship, something platonic, surrogacy,” or even beyond. It’s a really nice touch to flesh out the life-simulation aspects even more, and as a slightly less realistic bonus, these babies are coming in right away, “because science!”
Newborns are getting some love, too: they’ll now have access to the full range of skin tones and eye colors, a small but incredibly welcome tweak. They got a little visual and animation overhaul to help them look a bit younger, given the introduction of the childhood life stage. In other good news, your Sims will now be able to continue holding babies while engaging in other interactions and will automatically respond if the baby cries.
Upon becoming a baby, you can choose from six traits: cautious, sensitive, calm, intense, wavy, and cheerful. You can also build a baby from scratch with the complete set of Create-A-Sim tools: hairstyles, clothes, all the work. There are lots of cute clothing options including jumpsuits, onesies and hooded onesies, even special baby glasses and sunglasses, and the option of a baby helmet if you want to keep them safe .
There are also new baby-related options for adults. Along with options for birthmarks, stretch marks, and caesarean scars, you will now be able to determine whether or not your sim is able to produce milk, allowing them to breastfeed if they wish. We look at some of the interactions in the bathroom, where adults will test the water temperature and play with the child while washing it. There’s also a high chair overhaul, so these should work much better for babies and toddlers than before.
The Sims 4 Kids update will launch for free on March 14. This will be followed soon after by the release of The Sims 4 Grow Together paid expansion, which will arrive on March 16 and will focus on the broader aspects of family life.
