It looks like the new Fantasy Life game might be the next best thing for Animal Crossing: New Horizons players.
During yesterday’s Nintendo Direct, we had the reveal of Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time, the next game in the Fantasy Life series. Nintendo not only unveiled the game for the first time, but also gave us a new trailer that quickly drew comparisons to Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Prior to The Girl Who Steals Time, the Fantasy Life series consisted of a 2012 3DS game and a mobile spin-off that has since been shut down. The game is an RPG and life-sim hybrid that lets players do everything you’d expect to see in a life-sim, plus a variety of fantasy elements like slaying dragons and role-playing .
For the latest installment in the Fantasy Life series, it looks like developer Level-5 took inspiration from another well-known life sim from Nintendo. As you can see in the Fantasy Life: The Girl Who Steals Time trailer, which we’ve added below, the series has improved its visuals for the Nintendo Switch and now features a look similar to Animal Crossing: New Horizons. . To be fair, the previous installment of the series looked very similar: it was a bit more pixelated to fit the Nintendo 3DS’ small screen.
It’s not just the look of the game that has piqued the interest of Animal Crossing fans – some of the game’s features are also very reminiscent of the island escape game. First, this Fantasy Life game takes place on an island, which players can build and customize as they wish; this includes modifying the terrain of the island, similar to how players can terraform in New Horizons. There’s also the ability to chop down trees, cook, arrange furniture in your home, and customize your character, just like Animal Crossing.
Since Nintendo seems to be taking a step back when it comes to the new Animal Crossing: New Horizons, update 2.0 nowadays was the “last major free content update”, Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time might be the next best thing for fans when it releases this year.
