away 5The recent 60FPS patch has us dreaming of another update to an American open-world epic. Yes, Rockstar’s Wild West game Red Dead Redemption 2 has been one of our most wanted candidates for a next-gen update for years, so much so that we’re doing everything we can to make it exist in 2023.
You may be thinking, ‘why now?’ Well, believe it or not, Red Dead 2 is five years this year, so what better way to celebrate its fifth anniversary than by presenting it as it should be on modern consoles? It’s a little hard to believe Rockstar’s sprawling American adventure turns half a decade old this year; Seems like only a few years ago we were frolicking in Strawberry taking names and faking our own. Jim Milton you say? You would want 60 frames per second, if you had any idea what that was.
On that last point, we have to admit that 60FPS is about all this game needs to feel modern. RDR2 still looks excellent, especially on Xbox Series X, where the Xbox One X version shines in beautiful 4K. Of course, Rockstar could probably add a few more bells and whistles to the title, much like their recent GTA 5 update, but the game certainly doesn’t need much else.

Smoother frame rates have become a massive selling point for us this generation and going back to 30FPS is just plain hard. It’s doable, especially in a fairly slow-to-control title like RDR2, but there’s something wrong with gaming at this lower frame rate these days. Especially when in the back of your mind you know it could and maybe should work at 60.
The prospect of a re-release opens up other potential options, such as a new expansion or another notable update to justify Rockstar inevitably charging for the game yet again. But, given Rockstar’s overall direction in recent years, we can’t imagine that something like this dead red 1‘Undead Nightmare’ is in the works – the team seems to have moved away from single player expansions these days.
To be fair, we’d love a simple framerate unlock patch as much, especially if it means we could keep the game and its gigantic file size on an external hard drive. We’re not picky Rockstars, we just want to see this amazing title fully updated for Xbox Series X and S!
