There’s more to the island of Sons of the Forest than surface, and a seemingly rushed ending produced a lot of general bewilderment and head-scratching. One moment you’re exploring a lava-filled cavern while unsuccessfully trying to fend off pointy-legged mutants by waving a cross, and the next you’re staring at a cyberpunk town. Once everything is ready, you appear in the helicopter, stroking your chin and trying to look less stunned than the others. However, if you pay attention to the different parts of the island’s story, the ending makes sense. Almost.

What does the cube do in Sons of the Forest?

As you explore the island to gather the various equipment necessary for survival on the island, such as the chainsaw, you will inevitably come across some mails. These emails were printed for unknown reasons and have spread to most shelters on the island in what can only be considered a minor act of eco-terrorism and a large-scale failure of cybersecurity protocols. Some of these emails will consistently refer to a cube as an artifact, found somewhere on the island.

This is the cube you enter at the end, with golden walls. Every eight cycles (which are not fully explained), the island enters a dimensional slide, seemingly causing anything not inside the cube to turn into mutants. Inside the cube is a soldier and Kelvin: the human who tried to enter the cube behind Kelvin was a simple red shirt that existed to show players what happened if they couldn’t enter. the cube in time. The soldier holding the laptop found a countdown to the dimensional shift.

The futuristic city is the vision of an alternate dimension that briefly joins that of the islands, and the slide ends once the image disappears. That’s why, once out of the cube, you see the strange mutant with the head hanging from the red shirt. With the island’s secret unlocked and little to no reason to deal with these dimensional shifts in the future, the family briefly seen in an earlier cutscene choose to leave the island, along with the player and any survivors. The members who board the helicopter are not presumed to be the missing billionaire family unless you managed to catch the secret ending.
