If you’ve been on the show since 1996, you might have noticed that Resident Evil has a bad habit of killing off your favorite side characters. I won’t name names just yet, as I don’t want to spoil anything, but Resident Evil 4 seems to take particular joy in making you really love someone and then mercilessly killing them when you least expect it. As we get closer to the release date of Resident Evil 4 and the return of horror game Capcom and Leon Kennedy, the latest trailer for Resident Evil 4 Remake seems to be hiding a subtle but very disturbing easter egg.
Massive spoiler warning for Resident Evil 4. If you haven’t played the original game or want to stay in the dark for the remake, you might want to go back now. Everyone else, follow me.
Alright, we all remember what happens at the end of Chapter 3 Part 3 in the first Resident Evil 4. Luis Sera, our beloved and accommodating fellow cop, is killed by a tentacle on the back of the arch of Los Iluminados Osmund Saddler. Especially after the fight in the cabin, Luis feels like your brother: if Capcom’s goal here is to make you really hate Saddler, as soon as the spike pierces Luis’ chest, the job is done.
However, the new Resident Evil 4 Remake trailer suggests that Luis lives on way beyond Chapter 3. He is seen alongside Leon in the van section. This is where we fight the two El Gigantes. At first glance, it looks like he’s going to pull through: our number one, other than maybe The Merchant, has been allowed to live. But it is not that simple.
It’s a great blinking moment and you’ll miss it, onscreen for less than a second, but if you pause the new RE4 trailer at the right time, you may see something odd lurking at the bottom of the frame. We’ve taken the liberty of highlighting and lighting it up in the image below.
Look at this? Just before Krauser steps in to confront Leon, there appears to be a body lying on the ground with a knife in its back. Brown leather jacket. Gray pants. Yeah…looks like Luis won’t make it after all. Personally, I’d be happy to spend some more time with the guy before he leaves; it’s a welcome change in Resident Evil 4 Remake.
I can also follow Capcom’s thinking here. If Krauser is the one who kills Luis, it helps strengthen the Krauser-Leon rivalry, just like he made you hate Saddler in the original game, if Krauser kills Luis in RE4 Remake, you have extra motivation to finish him off.
I still hope I’m wrong. I hope Luis survives. and Mike And I hope that somehow Mikael comes back. and kendo. and Marvin and Richard Aiken. And maybe Steve Burnsi, not really, not Steve.
