Early last month, we got word that Arkane’s upcoming open-world shooter, Redfall, would need a constant online connection to run, even in single-player mode. The news was confirmed via a developer FAQ page, but it seems the team has taken fan reception very seriously since its discovery.

In an interview with Eurogamer, Arkane’s Harvey Smith confirmed that the team has already started looking to remove this requirement. This seems to be quite a complicated process though, and the feature may not arrive on game launch.

“We hear. And we’ve already started working on fixing this in the future. We need to do a few things like encrypt your backups and do a lot of UI work to support it. And so we’re investigating, I’m not supposed to promise anything, but we are actively investigating and working to remedy this in the future.”

The fact that this patch appears to be “one for the future” doesn’t fill us with hope that it will be ready for the game’s release on May 2, but the fact that they listened and are actively working to change it is great to see.

It also means that if this offline solution is implemented, the game should continue to function well beyond the lifespan of its online servers. Combine that with the fact that Redfall will it comes on a retail disc, and it should remain playable one way or another for years and years to come.
